When did thong bikinis become so popular?

In the 90s it was rare to see a woman wearing a thong on the beach. Today more than 75% of women wear thongs. What year did the shift occur and who started the trend?

    Probably social media and peer pressure.

    Too young to remember a shift, sorry. I grew up seeing it, so "post-shift"

      Excellent theory. It was caused by the advent of web 2.0, social media and Facebook in the early 2000s. Although one might attribute quite a lot of societal trends to the rise or social media.
